3 Types of Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Roofing shingles are an essential component of any roofing system, and they come in different materials and designs to suit various roofing needs. Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing shingle used in North America. Asphalt shingles, also known as composite roof shingles, are highly durable and can withstand most types of weather conditions. These shingles are a composite product made from fiberglass or cellulose mat, asphalt, and mineral granules. They can last for decades, depending on the climate, and require minimal maintenance. Unfortunately, asphalt shingles need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years if they haven’t been properly maintained. Asphalt shingles are ideal due to their attractive appearance, affordability and weather-resistant properties. Despite their lower cost, however, they still offer a high level of performance and protection. With a wide variety of colors and styles available, they can be used to complement almost any home design. The dynamic properties of asphalt offer many benefits including:

  • Enhanced resistance to hail damage
  • Can withstand high winds
  • The ability to fight algae growth
  • Naturally fire resistant
  • Heat reflection which helps keeps home cool
  • Relatively lightweight
  • Can cover many different angles, shapes, and forms
  • Easy to install
  • Easy to repair
  • Recyclable

Here are three different types of asphalt shingles commonly used for roofing.

Strip Shingles

Strip shingles are the most basic asphalt shingles. They are also known as 3-tab or simple strip shingles. Strip shingles are made from a single layer of asphalt. In general, strip shingles weigh less and cost less because they are only made of a single layer of asphalt. While these shingles might be great for folks in the Northwest and Northeast, they can get a little finicky during windy or temperamental weather. But don’t sweat it too much – if you need to make repairs, these shingles are super lightweight, so it’s a breeze to lift and replace them one-by-one. And if some end up flying off, just dab some roof cement above and below the shingles to keep them snug and secure.

Dimensional asphalt shingles create a custom look

Dimensional Shingles

Also known as architectural or laminate shingles, dimensional shingles are the most common asphalt shingles used today. These shingles are made by using two or more layers of asphalt  combined together for a sturdier and richer multi-dimensional appearance. They are designed to imitate wood shake and natural slate roofing looks. These shingles are usually heavier than simple strip shingles. These shingles also usually have improved warranty protection.

Luxury Shingles

The highest quality composite shingles are luxury shingles. These singles offer first-rate protection from weathering. They are also impressive looking, offering the highest quality, color, and dimension. If you want an old-world wood shake or quarried slate look, luxury shingles are the perfect choice. Consider upgrading your roof with luxury designer shingles – crafted with durable materials that can withstand the toughest weather conditions, including wind, hail, and rain. These shingles have a lifespan that outlasts other roofing materials, and with a warranty of up to 50 years, your investment is protected for the long haul.
